Deforestation

Deforestation

Deforestation is a very major issue all over the world! This is because many forests are being cut down as people need trees for making furniture, eating, medical purposes etc. People have been cutting trees present on the Earth for several years.

One major side effect of deforestation is that many endangered animals lose their habitats. Every year approximately 3.5 to 7 billion trees are being cut down. Now the forests cover only 30% of the Earth’s surface and it is estimated that there will not be any rain forests left in around 100 years. According to the FAO Nigeria, has the world’s highest deforestation rate of primary forests.

One major side effect of deforestation is that many endangered animals lose their habitats.137 species of animals are becoming extinct every day meaning that 50,000 species of animals are becoming extinct each year. Due to deforestation many trees are being cut down which is causing problems such as global warming, people becoming vulnerable to asthma because of the loss of oxygen and loss of habitats etc.

What we are doing to the forests of the world is a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to each other. Many countries of the world have been affected very badly due to deforestation and have ended up with very few trees left with them to survive. Some examples of such countries are Qatar, Oman, San Marino, Greenland and many more.

Many countries have developed different ways of reducing deforestation. For example, in some countries like India there is one day every year in which every citizen must plant a tree for the sake of reducing deforestation.

Lego League 2020

On January 24th 2020, five Boston High School students went to Norwich to compete in the first Lego League: City Shaper tournament. They left with the innovation challenge award!

The day didn’t start off very well with the team showing up late because of 2 diversions. The first task that they did was core values. They were asked many questions about how they worked as a team and how they settled disagreements. Team leader Poppy said, ‘I think our team did splendid!’

The second task was robot design, they had to explain the design of their robot to three judges. They also showed one of their programmes to them. Paige said, ‘We didn’t really decorate our robot because we focused on function over form.’

The third task was the presentation of their innovation challenge. The group thought of, designed and made an energy producing playground. Olivia said, ‘The judges were very impressed. They said it was a brilliant idea to make producing energy fun.’

The fourth and final task was the challenges that they had to complete with the robot that they programmed. Alex said, ‘It was a fun experience!’ Daniela said, ‘It was very nerve-racking!’

Overall, the team had a great day and enjoyed every moment of it. Even better, they cam away with the innovation challenge award.
