The Real Paranormal Activity

Over the years there has been many apparent ghost sightings. Some can be clearly classed as fake but others maybe not, so here is the question;

Are ghosts real?

We were lucky enough to speak to a student at Boston High School that had an encounter with a ghost that she has nicknamed the Emerald Suit Man. She told us, “hewas hiding around a corner behind the stage and right before the show was about to begin I was getting into position when I noticed a figure”.  She continued to say, “the figure actually spoke to me, saying that he knew my mum”. The student said it wasn’t until she was walking home that she realised it was a ghost. The next day she asked her dance teacher whether anyone was meant to be there and the teacher confirmed there wasn’t.

It has been reported by local media that Blackfriars Arts Centre is haunted. Blackfriars is also believed to have been built on top of a graveyard where monks could have been buried. A monk is understood to walk around in a black hood which they call him Father Michael. Blackfriars isn’t the only place said to be haunted in Boston, Lincolnshire.

Boston Stump, St Boltoph’s, has only opened again recently so will visitors spot one of the ghosts that is known to roam the grounds called ‘the grey lady’. It is said she jumped off the stump and now haunts it.

Please comment below if you have experienced paranormal activity.

A Journey Through Dance

There are a variety of dance styles. If you want to lose your stiffness, become as bendy and as stretchy as an elastic band – then Acro is key.

The Young Journalist Academy spoke to a student at Boston High School who attends JCADA Dance Academy and is a Grade 4 dance student. She said, “Acro allows you to flop, flip, bend and stretch, but gives your body an advantage and makes you spontaneously flexible”.

When we asked her about other dance styles for those who don’t think Acro if for them, she added, “If you don’t feel you are up to the challenge of hours stretching yourself, you can slot yourself into any other style. For instance, ballet- calming and soft. Modern- upbeat and fun. Tap- fast and enjoyable. If you want to, you can get yourself involved in shows, festivals and competitions so you can earn yourself multiple rewards”.

It is known that young people can suffer from injuries through dance – Be careful of these!

Snapping Hips~ this may sound horrifying but all it is, is where your hips tend to make a snapping sound where you make a motion with your hip.

Torn/pulled ligaments~ this is where you over stretch yourself over the limits but it WILL wear off after a while.

Broken bones~ if you’re a clumsy person that tends to fall over multiple times, take caution when doing leaps and jumps and ensure you land correctly otherwise you may fracture something with all the forces going against you.

Minecraft, a worldwide game created by MOJANG, has spiked people’s interests for many years, ever since it got released and started to pick up followings and Youtubers making videos on survival mode. It has become a worldwide video game that has brought in a lot of income over the past few years.

According to ‘The Verge’, there has been a 25% increase in Minecraft players during the Covid-19 pandemic with the average age for Minecraft players is 24 years old.

Streamers on Twitch who gained a quick following at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic are still going strong with Minecraft gameplay and streams.

Dream, GeorgeNotFound, Sapnap, Tubbo, TommyInnit, Wilbur Soot and more like them have gained millions of followers and subscribers just from playing Minecraft survival mode.

TikTok

TikTok is an app on social media where people can post videos to their heart’s content.

Every couple of months, new fashion trends find there way on to this app. These fashion trends have varied from summery dresses to having the perfect leg warmers and Ugg boots.

TikTok’s most recent trend is known as the ‘Gilmore Girls style or Twilight aesthetic’. The current fashion trend which rose to popularity in summertime of 2021, has been viewed by over one million TikTok users. The staple pieces you need in your wardrobe to having this style are flared jeans, grandpa sweaters, leg warmers and arm warmers, converse shoes, mary-jane platform shoes and of course many necklaces! This style has become extremely popular all over the world – especially in America.

Considering the current fashion trend, the previous trends may shock you!

The previous trend before the ‘Twilight aesthetic’ was known as ‘coconut girl’. This trend consisted of happy bright colours, light coloured jeans, dad shorts, funky caps and decorated tote bags. This trend is still around, however, it is no where near as popular as the current twilight style trend.

Despite both of the trends’ popularity, they also got, and still get a lot of hate. People quote nasty things on these trends, from making fun of people, to saying they are copying everyone else. However, even through all the hate, the trend is still extremely famous on the app.

YJA spoke to a student at Boston High School who said, “I personally love both of the trends and don’t think they deserve any hate – people are just being a version of themselves that they like and should not be judged for that”.

Finally, what do you think the next big TikTok fashion trend will be?

Mindfulness

Do you ever feel stressed? Do you have an interesting hobby to help you relax?

The charity Mind has shared their NHS survey and it has been concluded that since 2017, 6–16 year olds in 2021 had experienced deterioration in mental health by 39.2% and in 17–23 year olds mental health by 52.5%.

Many people around the world struggle with mental health. Some people have a hobby to help them calm down or forget the tension in their minds.

Some hobbies people could try to help them relax are:

· Listening to music

· Knitting

· Dancing

· Colouring

· Reading

· Journaling (keeping a diary)

The Young Journalist Academy spoke to a student at Boston High School asking what helps them relax. They said, “During the weekend after a long week of school I usually like to relax myself by cooking sweet treats. A popular one with my family was Tres Leches”.

She explained, “Tres Leches (meaning ‘three milk’) is a sponge cake soaked in three different types of milk (evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream) topped off with a white frosting and strawberries”.

Deforestation

Deforestation

Deforestation is a very major issue all over the world! This is because many forests are being cut down as people need trees for making furniture, eating, medical purposes etc. People have been cutting trees present on the Earth for several years.

One major side effect of deforestation is that many endangered animals lose their habitats. Every year approximately 3.5 to 7 billion trees are being cut down. Now the forests cover only 30% of the Earth’s surface and it is estimated that there will not be any rain forests left in around 100 years. According to the FAO Nigeria, has the world’s highest deforestation rate of primary forests.

One major side effect of deforestation is that many endangered animals lose their habitats.137 species of animals are becoming extinct every day meaning that 50,000 species of animals are becoming extinct each year. Due to deforestation many trees are being cut down which is causing problems such as global warming, people becoming vulnerable to asthma because of the loss of oxygen and loss of habitats etc.

What we are doing to the forests of the world is a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to each other. Many countries of the world have been affected very badly due to deforestation and have ended up with very few trees left with them to survive. Some examples of such countries are Qatar, Oman, San Marino, Greenland and many more.

Many countries have developed different ways of reducing deforestation. For example, in some countries like India there is one day every year in which every citizen must plant a tree for the sake of reducing deforestation.

Lego League

Lego League 2020

On January 24th 2020, five Boston High School students went to Norwich to compete in the first Lego League: City Shaper tournament. They left with the innovation challenge award!

The day didn’t start off very well with the team showing up late because of 2 diversions. The first task that they did was core values. They were asked many questions about how they worked as a team and how they settled disagreements. Team leader Poppy said, ‘I think our team did splendid!’

The second task was robot design, they had to explain the design of their robot to three judges. They also showed one of their programmes to them. Paige said, ‘We didn’t really decorate our robot because we focused on function over form.’

The third task was the presentation of their innovation challenge. The group thought of, designed and made an energy producing playground. Olivia said, ‘The judges were very impressed. They said it was a brilliant idea to make producing energy fun.’

The fourth and final task was the challenges that they had to complete with the robot that they programmed. Alex said, ‘It was a fun experience!’ Daniela said, ‘It was very nerve-racking!’

Overall, the team had a great day and enjoyed every moment of it. Even better, they cam away with the innovation challenge award.
